Über das Deck und die Strategie:

Several Duelists like to try out new and innovative strategies at the start of a new format, but we seldom see the game’s top players risk running something that may not succeed. We’re seeing several ‘safe’ Decks like Gladiator Beasts and X-Sabers on the top tables today, but 1 Duelist’s bucking the trend. It’s time to take a look at Yohann Descamps’ Absolute Zero Deck!

Yohann Descamps is a name that avid readers of European Yu-Gi-Oh! coverage will remember, as the French Duelist made it all the way to the Top 8 of this year’s WCQ: European Championship 2 months ago with X-Sabers. Today he’s brought along something completely different though, and it’s taken a lot of his opponents by surprise so far.

Descamps’ main strategy revolves around Special Summoning Elemental Hero Absolute Zero, putting his opponents in extremely difficult situations. Whenever Absolute Zero’s removed from the field, all of Descamps’ opponent’s monsters are destroyed. This works very well against Decks like X-Sabers which tend to have several monsters on the field at once, who will just refuse to attack Absolute Zero even if they’re capable of destroying it. Of course Descamps can get Zero off the field all by himself as well, as he can Tribute it for Caius the Shadow Monarch. This frees up his Caius to get rid of opposing Spells and Traps, while Zero’s effect takes care of the monsters.

To Summon Absolute Zero you need to combine any Elemental, Destiny or Evil Hero monster with a WATER monster through a Fusion Summon. Descamps is running several ‘Hero’ monsters like Elemental Hero Stratos, Destiny Hero – Malicious and Destiny Hero – Diamond Dude, along with plenty of WATER monsters in the form of Deep Sea Diva (3 copies), Spined Gillman and Snowman Eater. First off Descamps uses his ‘Hero’ and WATER monsters to Synchro Summon whatever he needs from his Extra Deck, and then removes them in the Graveyard from play with one of his 3 Miracle Fusions. Since he’s already used up the Fusion Materials for a Synchro Monster, the Miracle Fusions essentially give Descamps a ‘free’ Elemental Hero Absolute Zero. Since the Destiny Heroes in his Deck are all DARK monsters (along with the Caiuses), Descamps is running Armageddon Knight to instantly send Malicious, Necro Gardna or Plaguespreader Zombie to the Graveyard, and to top it all off he’s got the mighty Dark Armed Dragon in there as well.

Descamps’ Spell and Trap lineup contains several cards that can help him set up his key combos as fast as possible. Allure of Darkness, Destiny Draw and 2 Pot of Duality provide plenty of draw power, and Future Fusion can bring out an Absolute Zero as well. In fact, with Future Fusion Descamps can potentially Summon 2 copies of Absolute Zero; 1 with Future, and 1 with Miracle Fusion using the monsters he sent to the Graveyard for the first one, and when Future Fusion is destroyed, it automatically destroys Absolute Zero, which we already know is something Descamps aims to do. All the classic Spells like Dark Hole, Monster Reborn, Book of Moon (3 copies) Giant Trunade and Mystical Space Typhoon (2 copies) are in here as well. Most of his Spell Cards are Normal Spell Cards as well, which means he can potentially activate them for free with Diamond Dude’s effect. To finish off the Deck, Descamps is running only 5 Trap Cards, including 2 copies of Solemn Warning.

As we saw in his Round 4 Feature Match, Yohann Descamps’ Deck is capable of obliterating opponents with many different combos, even moreso if he draws his stronger hands. At the time of writing he’s currently undefeated, and given how much potential is in his Deck we could be seeing him make another major Top 8 finish.
